Week 7 choreography

This week we worked on the beginning of our dance, specifically the entrance. We enter the space by doing the ‘influence’ motif from week 5. We have developed this motif by adding accumulation, so each person joins with the motif as they enter into the space. We travel horizontally across the room in a straight line from stage left to stage right. We also added canon into the motif and the section after. We do a sequence of turns to face different directions which is influenced by one person and ripples down the line. We've used accumulation and canon in this first section because it's very effective at helping us demonstrate our stimulus of conformity. Using these choreographic devices at the start of the dance clearly shows the idea of fitting in with the standards of today’s society as each person joins in by copying the motif, following the person at the front of the line.

We also created a new section of the dance which will follow on from the entrance. We walk from upstage left to downstage right in a clump formation and one person at a time will do a movement different from what the rest of the group is doing. This looks really effective and also shows the idea of conformity and individuality. Our classmates told us that the intention of the piece is very clear to the audience however we need to ensure that the spacing is even when we are walking. Next week we will work on a transition between the two sections and clean up the spacing to make it more uniform.

  1. I love how detailed your analysis of the movements are! It really gives your movements significance and helps to convey your stimulus. Did you find any challenges while choreographing this week?

    1. Thank you! We faced some challenges with timing the entrance to the music to try and complement some of the slower tempo parts of the music. Another challenge we faced was ensuring everyone was doing the correct movements at the same time so it looks clean and uniform to contrast with the people who 'break away' from the rest of the group.

  2. Very good blog post Mhairi! I really like how in-depth you have analysed each movement. What do you want the audience to feel at the beginning of your piece? Do you believe that your beginning will capture the audience?

    1. Thank you Erin. At the beginning of the piece we are trying to create a sense of intrigue to the audience which I think is amplified by the use of accumulation. It sets the tone of the piece by demonstrating conformity which may not be immediately obvious to the audience but becomes clear throughout the piece. I think this will capture the audience as they will be questioning what is going on and their questions are answered as the dance continues.

  3. This is a very good blog post, well done! I really like how you have one person doing something different to the rest of the group. This clearly shows your stimulus of conformity and breaking out of the crowd! What do you want the audience to feel when you first step on stage doing the influence motif?

    1. Thank you Caitlin. As I mentioned above, we want to create a sense of intrigue and have the audience questioning what our dance is about. We perform the influence motif using accumulation, so one person joins in at a time, which introduces our stimulus of conformity. Hopefully this will not only capture the audience, but also clearly demonstrate our themes.
